What happens during a flood?

Many people are unaware that flooding doesn't just bring copious amounts of water to our streets. Unsurprisingly you could notice an increasing depth and volume of water, but many people are not aware that this water most commonly contains raw sewerage, dead insects, rodents including living or dead rats, pollution, toxic waste, debris, bacteria and excrement from the streets, farms and fields that surround many of our homes. During a flood, any or all of the above can be found making its way inside our homes, soaking in to our furniture, carpets, and personal possessions, not to mention electrical equipment and sentimental property, even endangering our family and pets.

How to avoid flooding

There are many recommended solutions available, and Councils usually offer sandbags in the event of flooding. There are contraptions that you can attach the outside of your doors during a flood and all sorts of other temporary solutions that may help reduce flooding, if you are able to act in plenty of time.

Flood Defence Doors

We have worked in partnership with The Flood Company to supply and install Flood Defence Doors for Welsh Water. Flood Defence Doors, also known as Flood Doors, are permanent doors which are fitted to your property 24/7. They are fully functional, attractive, high security (16-point locking) doors which automatically protect your property during a flood. There is no need for sandbags or other temporary measures, as Flood Defence Doors are designed to keep water out, even when it strikes by surprise. Even if you are away on holiday, your property and possessions are protected every day and night, and every door is provided with a 10 year guarantee. Why put the fate of your house in a sandbag? Why pay out in insurance excess or pay to replace your furniture, television, fridge freezer, contents and valued items, when the cost of a Flood Defence Door is much less, and provides inclusive peace of mind?

Flood Door Testing

In accordance with BSI requirements, the Sheerframe flood door has been independently tested under BSI control to demonstrate its adherence with PAS 1188-1 standards for flood protection products. Testing was undertaken at a test centre at HR Wallingford in 2015, with the inward opening Sheerframe PVC-U doors recording “no leakage” at 0.6 metre external submersion under static test over 48 hours, and French doors achieving just 0.001 litres of ingress in the same time period. The doors also remained watertight under dynamic tests simulating waves and rapidly moving water. STYLES AND COLOURS Sheerframe flood doors are available as fully or half glazed residential and French doors in white or a range of woodgrain finishes which meet BS 7722 standards for surface coated PVC-U profiles. Specialist colours are possible using the same foil application system, generally used on larger commercial projects where the impact of external colour is sought.
